Cheap and tasty – Café Vegas, Jerez
On the street-facing corner of Plaza Esteve is an always-busy café of the old-school: a rather masculine row of men occupy the bar with short glasses in front of them, a large TV plays, a couple of people deep-fry churros for a eat-in-or-take-away crowd, elderly waiters circulate at their own pace, and tables tend towards full.
Although nothing flash, and sometimes a little worn, Café Vegas has some of the best-value eating in Jerez, if you’re in the quantity for price, and nothing fancy, frame of mind.
Their €8 menu del dia comprises a large first plate, a larger second plate, bread, dessert, and a drink. On our recent visit Linda went with a salpicon, then bull-meat stew which came with chips, and I plumped for a Russian potato salad and pork meatballs, which also came with chips.
Full plates, good ingredients, and well put together: along with a freshly-squeezed orange juice and a glass of red, they went down a treat.
In place of dessert, we took a couple of coffees: my shot served in a tall glass, and Linda’s café con leche served in an identical one: steamed milk added, with a flourish, at the table by Juan, our waiter.
