A touch of France – Le Poeme, Cadiz

Le Poeme is perfectly located on a quiet stretch of the street next to the Central Market of Cadiz. With indoor and outdoor seating, it’s a great place to either enjoy the sun or take a break from the wind.

This is the second mid-morning breakfast I’ve had here, and both have excelled. Today I went for a whole grain bread with a house mix of tomato and olive oil, with an espresso to wash it down with.

Linda’s toast and mine arrived a few minutes apart: fresh bread, freshly toasted both times. The espresso was not burnt (a rarity in Spain) and had nice chocolate and hazelnut tones.

Inside, the temptation for a second course is strong: French pastries, Neapolitans, croissants. It’s a shame I’m not much of a breakfast person.

And if you’re in the mood for churros instead of something sweet, pick some up at the stand across the road, and order yourself a rich hot chocolate here – a chalkboard outside clearly says Se admiten churros, always a good sign.

A coffee and tostada or “mollete”, €2.20. Pastries from €1.30.
