Comfort and accessibility at Villa Cicubo, Salzburg

We stayed at Villa Cicubo when we were last in Salzburg. Here are our thoughts…

This villa has very recently been turned into a small hotel: just a couple of rooms on each floor with configurations for single travellers, partners, and for families. We had a double room on the second floor: just one flight of stairs up from the small reception and complimentary 24/7 tea, coffee, and pastries which are kept there.

Our room was very nicely furnished with a comfy bed (and nice new sheets), a small couch, work desk, wardrobe and a beautifully appointed bathroom. Views were to the forested side of the Kapuzinerberg mountain. The size of the hotel gives it a feeling of intimacy, of ‘coming home’ at the end of a day’s sightseeing or a night out at the nearby Die Wiesse brewery.

It’s a 5-10 minute walk to the pedestrianised shopping street of Linzergasse which is where the old town starts and less than 15 minutes’ walk from the train station. Many of the city’s hotels are on this side of town, so you are in good company. The nearest bus stop heading to town is just a minute away – on the nearest street corner; and there’s a very busy Pakistani restaurant next door which we never found time to try.

The windows do an amazing job of shutting out the street noise, but noisy neighbours can be a problem, like anywhere: Linda was woken one night by a group coming home. Although I could hear people above us moving about during the evening, I didn’t wake when they returned to the hotel.

This must be one of the newest hotels in Salzburg. They had only been open a month when we stayed in early April, and the newness definitely showed with fresh paint, carpets, furnishings… and a few small unfinished touches here and there which were being tidied up.

There’s no breakfast included, but the complimentary tea and coffee is on offer all day, with pastries, fruit and snacks for as long as they last. We were provided with discount vouchers for breakfast at a local café, but never used them: I’m not much of a breakfast person, so not having it meant better value for money in my case.

Villa Cicubo pricing is seasonal, and available on their website. You can book directly through Hostelbookers or Booking.com. Although there are places closer to the centre, the value for money here is easily seen.
