A Backpacker’s Fairytale in Split, Croatia
A backpacker’s fairytale? The name did grab my attention when we were looking for a hostel in Split, Croatia.
We arrived at the Split bus terminal in pouring rain and stopped in for a coffee while we waited for it to abate. When our coffees were well over, we decided a taxi was in order, but our attempts to flag one were stymied.
“It’s just 50 metres that way,” the driver told us, while directing us to the wrong place. Since our trousers were already soaked through, we decided to avoid the taxis and started the short uphill walk.
When we did arrive — dripping wet — on the suburban street that houses the hostel, we had five flights of stairs to climb. After we had done that, life changed for the better!
The hostel is wooden-floored and decorated in bright colours. Views from some rooms and the large common room look out over the old town and harbour below. A well-equipped kitchen produced a couple of cups of coffee in short order and we were given a run-down on what to do and see. Maps, tourist info, a PC and free wifi provide additional information; and excursions can be booked through reception.
There’s a private double, in addition to four-, six-, and eight-bed dorms all on one floor. There’s a shower for guys and another for girls, and there are additional toilets too – everything clean and well-maintained.
Less than five minutes’ walk from the ferry and bus terminals, and about the same into the heart of the old town, Backpackers Fairytale is a small, well-located hostel with friendly staff and good facilities.
